Our 2021 Summer Craft Fair was a huge success!

Updated: Dec 5, 2021

It was a fantastic day out whilst also helping to promote small local businesses!

On Sunday 8 August 2021, we held our first summer craft fair, partnering with two other local businesses, Crafty Baggage and Crafty Praxis.

Ever since the covid restrictions were lifted, we have been very busy planning our events calendar for the year. For our first event, we wanted to open our doors to the general public and also help other small businesses affected by the pandemic.

To achieve our aim, we approached two local businesses owners, Debbie and Katie from Crafty Baggage and Crafty Praxis, to create a large event. We all knew that a summer craft fair would be the ideal way to give local businesses a boost whilst also providing the public with a great day out at our large Victorian venue. So we all got to work creating a summer craft fair to remember!

And what a day it was! We had:

  • Over 20 craft stalls from local businesses.

  • Food vans and sweet stalls.

  • Picnic and eating areas with marquees.

  • Cake stalls with vegetarian and vegan options.

  • Children's activities.

  • Power hoop demonstrations.

  • Craft workshops making felt sunflowers and pom-pom earrings.

  • Live music from the "Gypsy Jazz Jam Sessions".

  • Guided historical tours of our grade 2 listed Victorian mansion and its grounds.

  • A live perform from our Ukrainian dance troupe, Золота Калина!

  • A demonstration of how to play petanque on our very own court from the "Huddersfield Petanque Club" chairman.

Here are some photos of the day:

Ukrainian Embroidery Craft Stall

In addition to all of the above, the chairman of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB), Petro Rewko, also had a craft stall. Petro was selling Ukrainian embroidery and crafts from his family collection, and all the proceeds were donated to charity.

Petro commented:

The craft fair was an amazing day. Not only did our community get together again, but we also raised lots of money for local and Ukrainian charities. We'd like to thank everyone for their amazing support and the Huddersfield branch for making us feel so welcome!

Ukrainian dancing from Золота Калина!

Our dance troupe had a few absentees for their performance due to the summer holidays, however, Neve, Zara, and recently joined Nathanael, had more than enough enthusiasm and energy to give an amazing performance. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed the show!

Maria, our dance choreographer, said of the performance:

Our dance ensemble is improving every week and their dedication always shines through in every performance. It's a pleasure to teach them.

A guided historical tour of the club

Michael Drapan from our control committee took on the lead role for tours of our club. Visitors were treated to a 40 minute tour of our Victorian mansion where Michael explained its rich and vibrant history.

A bit about the organisers

The craft fair was organised by Debbie from Crafty Baggage, Katie from Crafty Praxis, and Petro Dorotiak from our Huddersfield AUGB committee.

Debbie's Crafty Baggage is a family run business that was founded in 2018, making craft gifts from wool, felt, leather, and wood. She regularly runs craft fairs in Huddersfield Byram Arcade and also craft workshops throughout Huddersfield.

Katie owns Crafty Praxis, which is a craft shop based in the beautiful Byram Arcade. The shop sells a lovely variety of handmade gifts including cards, art, jewellery and pottery, all from local crafters and artists.

Petro Dorotiak is a volunteer from our committee and he organises many cultural events for the club. He is also our membership secretary, social media manager, and shkola coordinator.

Even more craft fairs to follow!

The partnership between Huddersfield Ukrainian Club, Crafty Baggage, and Craft Praxis was such a huge success, therefore, we have already started planning a Christmas Craft Fair for 2021. And we won't be stopping there, with even more craft activities planned for next year.
